Minor Driver Education (Ages 14 years, 11 months – 17 years)
Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP)
All students must obtain a TIP from the Louisiana OMV prior to starting driver education. The TIP must be surrendered to OMV after course completion along with proof of completion and required documents.
Class E – Learner’s Permit Requirements
Learner’s Permit Requirements
- Completion of a state-approved driver education course
- For ages 15–17:
-> 30 hours classroom
-> 8 hours behind-the-wheel
Required Identification (Minors)
- Original documents only (no photocopies):
- Certified birth certificate or Louisiana ID
- Social Security verification
- Certificate of Successful Completion
- Certificate of Required School Attendance
- Parent or legal guardian present with ID
- Legal guardians must provide guardianship documentation
Graduated Licensing Program (Ages 15–17)
(Ages 15–17)
- Learner’s permit required
- Driving allowed only with qualified adult supervision
Permit Duration:
- Age 15: 180 days + until age 16
- Age 16: 180 days
- Age 17: Eligible for learner’s permit or full license
Testing Requirements (Minors)
Learner’s Permit
- Vision: 20/40 minimum
- Written test: 40 questions, 80% passing score
Full License
- Vision and knowledge tests
- Road skills test administered by OMV or licensed provider
Fees (Minors)
- $32.25 license fee
- $6 service fee (where applicable)
- Cash and credit cards accepted
Graduated Licensing Program (Ages 15–17)

- 30 hours classroom + 8 hours driving, OR
- 6-hour pre-licensing + 8 hours driving
Identification Required:
- Primary ID (birth certificate, LA ID, passport, or military ID)
- Social Security verification
- One secondary form of ID
Testing Requirements (Adults)
- Vision test: 20/40
- Written test: 80% minimum
- Road skills test with licensed provider
Fees & License Duration (Adults)
- License valid approximately 6 years
- $32.25 under age 70
- $18.75 age 70+
- $6 service fee (where applicable)
